Lake Tahoe is home to many a winter recreation area, including the renowned crosscountry skiing spot called the Royal Gorge. Located at Donner Summit, its world class facilities and amenities, including lodges, multiple huts for warming, restaurants, trails and lifts, can compete with any other state ski resorts. X-Country skiers enjoy fantastic scenery and mountainous landscapes, as well as the never ceasing Californian sunshine. In fact, to go anywhere else to cross country ski would simply reduce the level of enjoyment both possible and imaginable.

Many people visit the Gorge during the daytime, taking a chance to partake in skiing over 1000's of acres of groomed and backcountry trails, set against a backdrop of the Sierras. The Gorge is located just a short distance from Lake Tahoe and Reno. It is currently North America's biggest skiing resort for crosscountry skiers, ranking at '#1' in major skiing magazines. Some of the special features that make it so sought after include almost then thousand acres of skiing land, more than six hundred inches of snow annually, the biggest groomed x-country track and system on the continent (about three hundred and eight kilometers), 90 trails, 4 lifts, 2 nighttime lodges (Ice Lakes and Rainbow), 1 day lodge, biggest trail grooming machine fleet on the planet, snowmaking for 15km, 8 warming huts, 4 enroute trail cafes, 3 lodge to lodge trails, and a safe and breathable elevation of seven thousand feet. In fact, not only are the many trails used for cross country skiing, but many people also enjoy variations, including striding, diagonal striding, skating, telemarking and snow-shoeing.

The center also offers varied packages for vacationers, ranging from romantic couple to family fun. Packages are all-inclusive, allowing for free use of the trails, huts, lifts, rentals, lodgings, cafes and complementary meals in either the Rainbow's or Ice Lakes' restaurants, with a choice of traditional and modern Californian or rustic French cuisines.
