Lakes & Rivers

The lakes and rivers of the Tahoe area provide a wide range of recreational fishing opportunities, boating adventures and camping experiences. The proximity of major urban areas to Tahoe including the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento and Reno, Nevada, along with its large and varied number of rivers, lakes and streams, has made recreational opportunities one of the major uses of the region.

Fishing, hiking, swimming, boating, camping and all types of outdoor recreation abound on the lakes, rivers and streams of the Lake Tahoe area. Hiking trails meander along the canyon walls. Hikers can explore the trails and find pools for swimming, as well as great secluded spots for relaxing while they enjoy the splendor of the natural setting.

The many alpine lakes in addition to Lake Tahoe itself provide many opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing. There are twenty-three species of fish in the waters of the Tahoe National Forest, fifteen of which are considered game fish. The water sports and recreations of the lakes and rivers and the history of the West found around the Lake Tahoe area provide numerous opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.
