Lake Tahoe is nearly surrounded by national forests and wilderness areas. Wilderness areas can provide breathtaking vistas and quiet solitude. They are special places that require special behavior from each of us. Five wilderness areas are located in or near the Lake Tahoe Basin – Desolation Wilderness, Mokelumne Wilderness, Granite Chief Wilderness, Mount Rose Wilderness, and Meiss Wilderness. National Forests in the area include the Tahoe National Forest, the Plumas National Forest, the Eldorado National Forest, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
