When searching for real estate in Lake Tahoe, the most practical place to begin the hunt is by browsing a local real estate agent's multiple listing service (MLS). Once you find an MLS, you can customize your search by narrowing the results within parameters you've selected, such as price range, location, property type, number of bathrooms and bedrooms, square footage, even whether it has a view of the lake, mountain, or ski resort.

Despite the recent correction in the housing market, property values around Lake Tahoe have fared pretty well. Like any community built around a natural attraction, there's only so many homes that can be built on prime lots. Lake-front home around Lake Tahoe easily sell in the million dollar range, as do properties adjacent to ski resorts.

For example, in South Lake Tahoe, California as of October 2007, the median price was $440,000. Compared to the median home price for western U.S, which is around $318,000, the region is more expensive. But people are willing to pay substantially more to live in an area with bountiful natural beauty, excellent schools, and plentiful outdoor activities.
