Truckee California //
Truckee is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, just west of the Nevada state line. Located within the town limits is Donner Lake and Donner Pass over the summit of the Sierra Nevada is just west of Town. Interstate 80, the major east-west trans-Sierra "all-weather" highway, passes through the Town on its way between California and Nevada. Truckee is on your way to everywhere!
The Donner Party was snowbound and resorted to cannibalism near the site that would later become Truckee. Many of the area's place names come from this group. Truckee is the home of Donner Lake and the Donner Memorial State Park. As you travel along the historic Donner Pass Highway (U.S. Highway 40), you can stop at many places and either photograph the sights or just enjoy the spectacular views.
This charming town started as a railroad town named Colburn Station, starting with the Transcontinental Railroad. The railroad goes into downtown Truckee and the Amtrak passenger lines still stop there on the services from Chicago to San Francisco.
The four closest large ski resorts to Truckee are Squaw Valley, Northstar at Tahoe, Alpine Meadows and Sugar Bowl, making Truckee a great place for skiing as well as all types of other outdoor activities.
