Most of California's and Nevada's mountainous towns in the Lake Tahoe area have multiple snowboard and ski rental stores, catering to a large population that crowds its many ski resorts, as well as nearby towns. Even the locals would find such rental opportunities as difficult to choose from as any person who enters a massive mall looking for clothes. The choices are really endless when it comes to the skiing crowds and rentals are becoming more and more in demand for most.

There are many ski and snowboard rentals shops in California's and Nevada's Lake Tahoe skiing area. Skis are especially popular amongst visitors who don't want the hassle of lumbering equipment on the long drive up into the area, or in fact may live in an area of the United States where skiing and snowboarding is not a local possibility and therefore making it a waste of money and storage space for most people. In the end, renting equipment is far more satisfying.

Most of the companies that serve skiers and snowboarders will claim to be the best on the southern or northern side of the lake, but as their customers reveal, what really counts is not just the selection, but the attention to service that is hard to compare. In fact, most of the places supply such excellent snowboards, skis, boots and poles, as well as customer service that the chances of not finding one within a short time are very small. Most of them are conveniently situated near trams, gondolas and even in the main malls or high streets of resorts and towns along the lake. Unfortunately they are crowded locals and finding parking may be a slight challenge. Many find that simply entering on foot and then hopping on resort or hotel shuttles is the best option.

A lot of rentals come in varied packages. Some include just the basics, but others go further, allowing for deals that are well worth looking into. These include a certain number of days paid and an extra day for free, discounted tickets for ski lifts, complementary shuttle services, discounts on all rentals, specialized and more technologically advanced equipment, high end snowboards, complete servicing and special group size bookings.

Packages vary from store to store, but the general consensus ranges from general sport to high performance usage, including boots, skis or snowboard and poles. Other packages are available for crosscountry skiing too, and helmets and parkas are also available as well as clothing. Prices start from $14 per day to as high as $50, including special rates for children. Most of them operate between 7:30am and 7:30pm, seven days a week, including holidays.
