Lakes, Rivers & Falls //
Silver Lake is one of California's oldest and most loved camping, fishing and boating areas. Nestled below Carson Peak, the lake has been attracting trout anglers to the eastern Sierras since 1916. In fact, as tourists soon discover, the whole area began its fortuitous destiny thanks to a local fisherman and his friends. Today, it is still a place where beauty, history and outdoor recreation come together as one.
As any Californian knows, Silver Lake is a historical site where fishing has been prized for over one hundred years. In fact, its camping facilities and boating wonders intrigued the original founders of its resort so much that the rest became fishing history. Many visitors clamber to the area, to sit at the water's edge and catch a trout or two. Others opt of boating quietly across it, looking at the magnificent scenery. Either way, it has become a haven for many outdoors people.
As the oldest retreat of its kind in the eastern Sierra Nevada's, it drew the attention of a man called Roy Carson, who would eventually create the township of Carson Camp. He round the area to be so promising that he established a resort there, a place where he and his friends could enjoy fishing vacations, camping and even get in a bit of boating.
The name of the lake comes from the silvery appearance of the water, especially on cloudy days. It is one of about four such lakes that are part of the Mammoth Lakes to Lee Vining loop, or the June Lake Loop. It is situated just a short distance from such historical and recreational attractions as Yosemite National Park, Bodie ghost town and Mono Lake.
After so many years, the resort and area surrounding the lake has been developed a fair bit, but not so much as to take away from its natural beauty. Amenities include a café, RV park, general store, cabin and boat rentals, and fishing store. Amongst the most popular lures sold for fisherman there are the night crawlers, katmasters, power bait, sparkle fish, needlefish, rebels, troll rapalas, gibb's minnow and Nordic spoon. With three types of trout and a wealth of activities to enjoy, it is a good thing that locals and the stores have an idea which works best for which fish.
