Lake Tahoe is nearly surrounded by national forests and wilderness areas. Wilderness areas can provide breathtaking vistas and quiet solitude. Five wilderness areas are located in or near the Lake Tahoe Basin – Desolation, Mokelumne, Granite Chief, Mount Rose, and Meiss. National Forests in the area include the Tahoe National Forest, the Plumas National Forest, the Eldorado National Forest, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
